Published in 1885 this book is set in a mining community in Northern France during the 1860s. Zola extensively researched the conditions of the poor mine workers & even took a trip down a working mine. The book was written as a protest against the oppression & appalling working conditions of the time. A long but easily read piece of classic fiction.

I struggled to get through this book, which makes my rating by far the highest rating I’ve given a book that has been both physically and mentally exhausting to complete. This book struggles with pacing in a way that, while feeling somewhat natural to this type of story, shows its age. About 75% through the book I would not have been able to write a review, it felt as though nothing had happened until the last 200 or so pages, and that my interest in the book had completely diminished about 50 pages before then. The last 150 pages or so, however, built upon its (excessively, in my opinion) sturdy foundation in an emotional, intriguing, and beautiful way that I cannot describe or summarize for the life of me. The last 150 pages should be required reading for anyone interested in participating in leftist politics, but the other roughly 350 pages were truly difficult to get through for me. I recommend this book to anyone that loves “the classics” and anyone who finds the story compelling, and beg every reader to not give up halfway through no matter how much it feels like the story’s going nowhere.

The anarchist character also rules a lot. It’s worth mentioning that.

Qu'il est dur à lire ce livre. Un style brut, des personnages antipathiques et des relations malsaines, et pourtant, content d'avoir lu ce monument de la littérature politique explorant les conditions de vie des travailleurs.

Read this for a school assignment, this translation might not have been the best and that might be part of my experience.

The firsth 1/5th of the book is extremely slow and it feels like it's just page after page of similar looking/sounding names in French and a lot of relations that I had a hard time keeping track of. At one point I believed a character was gay as I mixed up a brother with his sister as their names were almost the same.

But around halfway through this book it got really good! And the last chapters weregood enought I had forgotten about how bad the first chapters were.

This was a tough read and stylistic wise, written amazingly. However, certain description choices, character choices, and scenes were distasteful for me.
