My first Murakami read. I really enjoyed the simplicity of his sentences. His sentiments seemed more sincere and relatable because of his straightforwardness.

Someone lock me up... I read too many murakami books at this point. It's just too darned funny! This guy writes and it's funny. He writes how his main character is cool since he sleeps with twins and reads Kant's Critique of pure reason. Then he writes how he would've been a great worker in Auschwitz!?!? It's just so bad that it becomes good and funny. He tried to be deep by having his dude read some deep stuff in bed or listen to classical music while perving on women, but he constantly misses. Murakami is like a car crash, you can't look away even though it's horrible.

I love the story behind these first two novels. That aside, I found it hard to connect with the main character in Hear the Wind Sing

These are early works and there's not a lot of story to either novel, but you get flashes of the writer Murakami would become. The twins in Pinball were delightful.
