Woman is assaulted twice in one night. She hates and kills one man, but falls in love with her (other) rapist. They live happily, ever after in America. Sure, Jan.

Oh. My. God.
Offensive, internalized misogynistic, racist TRASH.
Rape, rape, more rape, happy mammy slaves.... is it horrible.

I liked the writing style, and it made me want to read more historical romance. However, I didn’t vibe with the message. Contains racism, rape and sexism. It made me think, so even though I wouldn’t consider it romantic it made me think about issues surrounding race, sex and what we find romantic.

Couldn't get past the ship rape scene. Absolutely revolting.

Imagining hook as Captain Brandon Birmingham made this book 10 times better for me.

Brandon's ex-fiance was a bit over the top. Her over-the-top bitchiness along with the whole good=beautiful, bad=old and ugly theme going on made it feel a bit cartoonish. I still loved it despite this though.

Edit after nearly 6 years:
Ok. I know this isn't that great. I know it's tropey and ridiculous. I know it aged like yogurt in the summer heat. I know it's problematic in every way. But dammit, I'm sentimental about this one! I found this as a college freshman and something in my brain, and other parts, was brought to life like Frankenstein's monster and I was hooked. So several years, and many better (but similarly problematic) romance books later, I still look back on this one fondly and can't bring myself to lower my rating.
