Well, that was horrible.
I read this book for a course in adaptation studies, since it's a novellisation of a movie. I can honestly say, the movie was better. That one I actually liked.
Campion uses the book to explain certain mysterious things from the movie. Which is ok, I mean, I liked the mystery in the movie, but I was also curious to know the reasons. But apperently the reasons are absolute bullcrap. Everything that got explained was a horrible motivation for the thing! Never some deep philosophical reason, just characters that go like "meh, I feel like doing this. FOR ETERNITY!" Or they change their minds, for no reason at all.
Please, if you liked the movie, DO NOT read the book. You WILL ruin the movie for yourself.

I read this in college, have seen the movie, and am reading it again now, so I must really like it. I've never encountered a story quite like this one. The main characters have so much depth that I think you need to read/watch it at least twice before you really get to know any of them. Very emotionally powerful. Definitely not for everyone though.

This novel stands independent of the film, and the extra information made it more complete. Loved the movie and loved the book. Very easy to read and could read it very fast. Happy I have read it.
