A few too many characters to keep track of, but as usual I loved the ambience, character descriptions, setting, etc.

It is much more descriptive than I prefer. I knew who the killer was fairly early on in the book. It wasn't the clues that gave it away, it was the writing style (formula). Perhaps, I have read too many mysteries. I can understand the wide appreciation of the writing. The book describes the thoughts and motives of most of the characters. That part I found quite interesting.

Love this book just packed with all the twists and turns that you expect from a murder thriller. It's probably one of my favourite in the series. A must read for any murder/thriller fan

Found it hard to get into. Then I did get into it, and it went faster. Is there a version of noir for dreary sad brits, obsessed with class status, and 80s style bbc realness?

Nope, I just can’t do this. DNF at 73%. This is easily the most obnoxious, tedious, dull whodunit I’ve ever encountered. About 120 pages too long. James can’t describe a character sitting down without taking three paragraphs to describe the chair. I’m pissed off that I paid money for this.

Tortuously long, morose, but well-written

Not so sure I’ll read another one. This was my first. Towards the end I did a lot of skimming. Nevertheless, I thought it was richly written. Hats off to the narrator. What a lot to read aloud.

There's something about the tone and pacing of P.D. James's mysteries that's helping me with the book I'm working on, though it's far from a mystery. I've liked all of the ones I've read with one exception (I couldn't finish INNOCENT BLOOD). A TASTE FOR DEATH strikes me as particularly good.
