PD James tends to be overambitious. She also has a habit of repeating relationship threads and descriptions in very similar ways between novels, rather than trusting her readers to figure things out (I can see how she needs to make each book standalone so those new to her can 'get' it, but...). I do like her descriptions of police work, and there are some interesting things about class consciousness in British society, but the unsatisfying solutions to the mysteries (this one included) and the similar details between novels do dull her edge.
I found a copy of this novel in Leijay Resort, Galle, Sri Lanka, and read it during my lovely stay there.

Love PD James, she is amazing. I saved this book for ages because O knew that once I read it it would be over. It was worth the wait, I loved it.

Someday there won't be any more of these flawless British mysteries. But for now, I'm happy to say that James does not disappoint.

This is the 14th in the Adam Dalgliesh series written by P.D. James. I recommend that you read them in order since the private lives of the main characters become an important part of the story line. This mystery has everything that I so love--the isolated English house, the puzzling death of a resident, and the slow unraveling of the mystery. I was a little confused at the end. There was a sentence that was popped in from seemingly nowhere, but what the heck. P.D. James is 88 years old and I only hope that she has a trunkful of books that will be slowly released after her death. If you have come to love the characters in her books as much as I have, I recommend this book. And let's hope that there's a book or two still in the old girl.

I enjoyed this entire series, but it's so very dark that I was a little bit glad when it was over.
