The reason I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the slow beginning. This story takes place mainly in Madrid, Spain. It is the story of Sira who works as a dressmaker with her mother and another lady. She is engaged but falls in love and they leave Madrid and go to Tangiers. This is where the story begins to be interesting. As you read the story Spain has had an internal war and World War II is beginning.

Fun novel with mystery, intrigue, and romance. I loved the way Sira was able to reinvent herself and triumph over difficult situations, and work against the Nazi regime, to boot!

Though it is over 600 pages, it is a page turner and didn't drag like some longer books can. I saw it compared to Shadow of the Wind and I can see that, it is richly atmospheric and has some sinister aspects to the plot.

If I have any complaint, it would be that the ending was a bit pat and rushed for my liking, especially compared to the length of the book. Still, it is a minor complaint and I really enjoyed this one.

FINALLY finished this sucker. Of course then I find out it’s part of a series… love this book and the storyline so much!

It’s fascinating historical fiction covering the period before the Spanish Civil War through the beginning of Franco’s regime. With Spanish Morocco, post-war Madrid, and international Lisbon as it’s settings, this book is so entertaining and suspenseful. Like any good spy novel, there’s some romance as well.

Would’ve read it soo quickly in English, but decided to challenge myself in Spanish. Worth the effort!
