This book is one of my favorites in the Secret series. Cass's mother's disappearance right after the two really connected was sad, but the kids' tenacity and dedication to stop Señor Hugo was really exciting to read. The irony of Max-Ernest's chocolate allergy in a book filled with chocolate was funny to read and I actually learned a lot about chocolate in the book! I liked Yo-Yoji's character more in this book and the setting was both magical and also funny with it ending up in such a mundane location compared to what they had initially believed. This book maintains the silly energy of the first two books while still allowing the characters to grow up a bit, which I really enjoyed.

This book is very similar to the previous book in this series. In that it was a fun quick read, but just not as memorable or magical as the first book. The writing has improved and the narrator is just as quirky as before. But I started to feel a little bit of disconnect. I’m just searching for a little more substance from a kid’s book I guess? Still a fun time to read as an adult.

I don't know about this series. The risks aren't creative or dire. The plot is predictable. So why do I keep reading the series? I guess because they are amusing.

2018 PopSugar: next book in a series you started
(Ok, I actually apparently never read book 2 in the series. Whatever. Close enough.)
The continuing saga of Cass and Max-Ernst. Cass's mom has been kidnapped and it's up to the kids to find her. Like with the first book, it's cute and the kids are definitely superior to the incompetent, evil, or clueless adults. I won't go out of my way to read any more of this series now, but I also won't avoid it.
