I flew through this book, I loved the character of Menolly, and empathised with her a great deal. The whole book covers her first week at the Harper hall, where a great deal happens indeed. She makes friends and enemies and learns not just how to be a Harper but to be more sure of herself.
There was on moment in the middle which cause me to ahead a few tears, just at the genuine care and motherly love Menolly received it was wonderful.
Again, my only issues is the divide of men and women as worthy of being Harper abs such, but again this book is challenging that in it own ways and obviously being influence by the fact it was written in the 70s.
All in all a good book

This is a reread of course. Honestly the Harper Hall books strike me as McCaffrey's best out of the Pern series for a variety of reasons. Being written for younger audiences but not particularly dumbed down, familiar storylines and characters, and so on.

Just as good as the first book. 01/30/2017: Read this again. Enjoyed this just as much this time, and I think I will stay in the Pern world for a while.

01/26/2019: Just the right time for a re-read. How I wish she had written more about Menolly.

02/21/2020: It is wonderful to be back on Pern, and Menolly is one of my favorite characters

01/23/2021: These books never fail so satisfy, no matter how many times I read them.

04/25/2022: Read again

01/04: Read again

Menolly is still have to fight the same battles in this book as in the first, but we get to learn more about the other characters, which was nice. The ending is clearly leading to the third book. For most of the end I was wondering how this book was going to propel itself and then it’s a quick conclusion that does the trick. It’s not bad and I feel it can still be enjoyed today.
