It’s less a fake dating romance book and more a book about getting yourself back up after a breakup. Sadly I went in with wrong expectations + it was suuuper slow paced and the slowest slow burn ever

As of this point point I’ve become quite familiar with Macfarlane and her writing and I’d say this one was par for the course. Not to discount her, she’s one of my favorite authors and I think this book had a lot of her best to offer. She has an incredible ability to write fluid dialogue and britishisms aside, it’s easy to fall into lace with her narratives and characters. Not my favorite and not the weakest, this is a great Macfarlane read if you’re a fan of hers.

Almost tossed it. The first 20% or so were all self-loathing and questions about why Dan would ever leave his loving late-30s partner Laurie. Until the younger punk womanizer in the office, Jamie, gets stuck in an elevator with Laurie (seemed like about 250 pages in), I hated turning every page. After that the rest of the book was pretty obvious. There's a lot of Men Are All Bastards bashing, which is true. The one thing that struck me was one of the women wondering how her non-existent male twin would have managed. Yes, there is still a ton of sexual inequality in the workplace, and everywhere else. Despite that, it turned out to be clever, amusing, hardly even PG-rated chick-lit.

This is the second book I have read from this author and I have to say, I love her writing. I will be reading more of her books in the future. I also love her book covers, they are so cute! Loved all the British references too.
It’s a heartwarming, easy to read, fun book. Laurie is in her 30s and recently single after an 18 year relationship. Jamie works with her but of course, he is a ladies man and never taken seriously. The solution? Laurie and Jamie decide to ‘fake date’ in order to make her ex jealous. But as with all good rom-coms; they start falling for each other and their relationship blossoms. It’s predictable and slightly slow at times but it was a great read and I would recommend it as the perfect beach read!
“Keep a close eye on the worst things that happened to you, they could turn out to be a doorway, a route to someplace else entirely, a map you couldn’t yet read.”

The first half of the book deals with Laurie's breakup (which was infuriating and emotional) and the second half deals with the slow-burn romance. The author is, surprisingly, not black but did a good job of doing her research and tackling the difficulties of being a black woman. A pleasant quick read.

Loved this story. Didn’t feel rushed or fake and the characters had great growth and development
