A little slow in the first half of the book but it picks up after that.

I really liked it; but, it's definitely not for all readers. It's a mash up of science fiction, science fantasy, and climate tale. There's a magical element that can be challenging to wrap your head around. And, it takes a while for the reader to sense where all the threads are leading. He does tie them up if you're patient enough to get there.

This is so much more than just climate fiction! A book well worth reading, and that despite its highly speculative nature is relatively connected to reality, for instance the focus on Mount Pinatubo is not unheard of in more academic literature .
Thethree characters are well-constructed, develops over time, and capture your attention. For me, it took a while to get in to the story about Chapman the faun whereas the story about C432/3 captured me instantly. At the end, however, each storyline had me hooked!

I really enjoyed the “ripped from the front page” topics in the book including climate change, human overuse of the planet, and over-reliance on technology. The descriptions of the plot don’t, in my opinion, talk enough about the more philosophical or fantasy aspects of the story. I’m not sure I followed or recognized all of the connections between the three threads but I did enjoy the stories and consider this novel as indicative of where SciFi/Fantasy is headed.

I plodded through this to the end more out of curiosity than of enjoyment. And plodded is the right verb to match the slogging prose, the overwrought descriptions that advance neither the plot nor the characters. So glad the death march is over.
