The best thing about this book is learning more about team CFVY. We don't see too much of them within the animation, but they are such a unique and interesting team, who share close connections. I enjoyed reading this, and I look forward to reading Before the Dawn by E.C. Myers.

Listen, I'm biased, I fucking love RWBY and I'm starved for any type of content related to the show. So when I found out that there were also books I was in for it! I pretty much fell for Coco instantly when I saw her in the show and I cherished Velvet from the begging as well so, now, getting to know them better and getting to know Yatsuhashi (my favorite backstory btw) and Fox more and seeing team CFVY's dynamics and problems and the way they resolve them was amazing.
I loved the structure of the book too, having chapters about their past, about when Beacon fell, about when they got formed as a team and sent to missions and "now" made the book very enjoyable for me. Having flashbacks in a story like this one made me devour the book in no time! Can't wait to get my hands on the next one!
It was a lot of fun, a lot of action, I could't help but get emotional at times because I'm so attached to the show and the character that I can't help it. And I love them so much!
Also, Coco be my girlfriend!?

I am a bit biased because I adore RWBY as the anime show and have been watching it since they released the Red Trailer all the way back in 2012.
I think the positives of this book are that it is fun and fast pace, staying true to the show and characters involved. I loved that it had some ties to past events and filled in some gaps that the show left open.
However the writting was a tad weak but it also feels like it is targeting an audience that is in the early YA ages - to late middle grade. So some of the writting choices might be to help that target audience and have a book that is very easy to read, which this is.
I do wish that there was more of a finish to the book, and not left so open ended but I also get that they are probably leaving it open for other books and obvisously the show to continue on the story line.
This would make a great longer "movie" epidsode for the RWBY anime in my opinion haha :D

5 Stars- I think it is important to mention that this book does contain spoilers to RWBY- which is an amazing show that I thoroughly enjoy. Seriously if you haven't seen this show I totally recommend you check it out. It's got kids with awesome weapons fighting monsters, oh and did I mention they have powers- cuz they do. Alright on to the book review.
It just so happens that my top 3 characters in RWBY are: Ruby, Nora, and Velvet (& my sister absolutely loves Coco- & how could you not?). So I was thrilled to see a book focusing on team CFVY (Coffee- which is such a great name btw). I already adored Velvet and Coco but was excited to get to know more about their teammates: Yatsuhashi & Fox.
Yatsuhashi seems like this big, intimidating guy when he's really just a big teddy bear. He's strong and powerful, but he's also very caring and meditative. Yatsu is reluctant to use his semblance and often worries about his teammates, especially Velvet. I wholeheartedly ship Velvet & Yatsu they are so cute together and I am so for it.
If I'm being honest, when I started this book I didn't even remember Fox was on team CFVY, but he seriously became my favorite character in this book. He was absolutely hilarious, his semblance is freaking awesome, he's an amazing fighter, and did I mention he's blind-man this kid is impressive. I also loved that we got to know each of their backstories more throughout this book.
I thought it was really cool that we got to see what was going on with team CFVY in the present story, as well as, flashbacks to their time at Beacon Academy. By doing this we got to know the characters better and see the dynamic between this amazing team. For some reason, in the show, it never clicked for me that team CFVY was a year older than team RWBY and I loved seeing the interactions between these two teams it definitely made my fangirl heart happy.
I really enjoyed the plot of this novel. Team CFVY is answering a distress signal out in the desert of Remnant in a town called Vacuo. True to RWBY fashion this story contained a lot of action, amusement, and of course Grimm. I completely recommend this book to anyone and everyone- although you should probably watch the show first. RWBY fans will be pleasantly entertained and happy to know what team CFVY has been up to while away from Beacon. I am very happy that I have this novel in my collection and am excited to see that this is going to be a series. I will definitely be continuing on once the next book comes out.
Happy Reading my Friends.
