I saw this book while I was browsing Libby, and immediately added it to my list.
"Hunt, Gather, Parent" follows author Michaeleen Doucleff as she explores how other civilizations parent their children. When Michaeleen became a mother she was overwhelmed with the advice that she was receiving from American sources, advice that did not seem to be working well. Exhausted and overwhelmed by parenting, she set out to travel the world and learn from other countries how they parent their children and what they do differently to produce what is widely considered to be very well-behaved, and helpful children.
I really enjoyed how this book was set up, and I think anyone who is looking for a book about how to parent, or who is looking to understand children better could benefit from reading this book. One of my biggest takeaways from this book was the idea that children need to feel like they have a purpose, and they actually want to help out their family. When a toddler wants to help clean up, and their parent pushes them away and hands them an iPad to keep them busy so that they can clean up uninterrupted, the toddler learns that that is their role in the family. As they get older, it becomes more difficult for the parents to get them to help out because the toddler was told not to.
Although I did not agree or like every idea presented in this book, I think the author does a great job of presenting the idea and allowing the reader to take from it what will help them.
