I don't like Cherie Dimaline's books.  I don't like her characters, her dialogue or her relationships.  I like the ideas, but they fell flat here.

A decently compelling plot, but truly beautiful writing. Books like this are why I read.

I loved Empire of Wild, a chilling story haunted by the rogarou (a werewolf-like creature), written by Métis author Cherie Dimaline.

The reader is left asking why the cost of making half-mistakes is so high. One man wonders aloud if they should sell their land (but he never takes a single step toward doing so); another teenaged youth verbally lashes out against his mother (who does not treat him as tenderly as he deserves). This question and its (deeply sad) answer seem to be the point: when your community is under attack, there is NO room for error.

*Note: I didn’t review this right away. There are, without a doubt,  some content warnings I’m forgetting to tag.

An incredibly creepy mystery horror about Rogarou. Joan’s husband Victor has been missing for almost a year when she stumbles into a revival tent and spots him. She is hungover but knows it’s his even when he insists not to know her. He is Eugene Wolff, bringing Jesus to the Métis but Joan knows there is more going on and is determined to get her husband back.

This definitely didn’t have a satisfying ending for me but the journey was good, I hope it gets a sequel!

Read it, then read it again. Then give it to everyone you know. It tells a story of North America that, once heard, you can't pretend to not know.

I loved the world building and story telling and all of it. The end was a little chaotic but built into it nicely. I loved Joan and her tenacity. Wild book where I honestly did not know what was happening and llooovved the chapters into victors mind as well. Well done. Picked up as rec by my tbr and solidified by being mentioned in the sentence a bunch. Worth the read especially if you're looking for more native american lit.
