Most what I say here is from my other reviews of books in the Kay Hunter series.
tl;dr: highly recommended, nice developing of the MC to a higher rank with leadership responsibility.

Will order the next book as soon as it is possible to. Some may think 5 stars is too much, what with the fast read (helped by the short chapters), again a little short, but I like this, and I stand by it.
Good police procedure, UK, nothing about BREXIT, no sex. Again 5 stars as the story is strong, no mistakes in the procedures and all was very good integrated in the series.

For fans of these series (Author - Heroine):
Angela Marsons - Kim Stone
Robert Bryndza - Detective Erika Foster
M.J. Arlidge - DI Helen Grace
Celina Grace - Kate Redman (too much romance and not strong enough heroine for me)
Griffiths, Elly - Ruth Galloway (must admit, I have only read 2 books and a novella yet)
Robert Dugoni - Tracy Crosswhite
Rachel Amphlett - Kay Hunter

And with the caveat of a male MC (but a female sidekick):

I can't quite believe we are already at book five in this fabulous series and it’s only getting better!

After events from the previous book, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this change of pace. Things are a bit more mellow, if you like, as Kay Hunter sinks her teeth into a cold case when she returns to work and is rather quickly tired of anything involving light duties. Not only is she determined to solve this ten year old murder, she's desperately trying to get DI Sharp reinstated after he remains suspended. What follows is a good old-fashioned pounding-the-pavement investigation which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The concept of a cold case is utterly fascinating to me. Witnesses may have passed away, or may not even remember where they were or what they were doing all those years ago. And some people have been keeping secrets for a very long time. What will they do to hang on to those?

In this case, a young soldier died in a motorcycle accident ten years ago. DI Sharp was working for the military police at the time but wasn't involved in the investigation since the accident happened away from barracks. But someone else was and his reputation is in tatters after recent events. Is it possible he made a mess of this case as well back in the day? If it wasn't clear from this slightly vague stuff here, you should really read the entire series so you get the full background of events.

As always, I adore how Rachel Amphlett manages to maintain a healthy balance between the cases Kay Hunter investigates and her life at home with her husband, Adam. Just as Kay looks forward to returning home after a hard day's work, I look forward to those chapters too as they provide the best kind of relief and allow my poor brain a moment to recover from trying to figure out the mystery that needs solving. Besides, it's always fun trying to predict which animal Adam has brought home to take care of.

Call to Arms lends itself to being read in one sitting and had me absolutely hooked. A fantastic page-turner and another brilliant addition to the series. I very much look forward to seeing more of Kay Hunter and her team!

"A cold chill crawled over his shoulders as fear began to overcome his anger. It wasn't meant to be like this. Everything was out of control."

*** A copy of this book was kindly provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! ***

First of all a shout out to the wonderful Meggy @ Chocolate'n'Waffleswho made me finally get to know Kay Hunter after I won this book in her giveaway a few months back. Thanks again for introducing me to what has become one of my new favorite series this year! <3 <3 <3

I became an instant fan of the main character of this series as soon as I got to know her in the first book back in April, and this feeling hasn't changed since. If anything, my love for Kay Hunter has only increased and picking up another book of this series is like putting on your favorite sweater, snuggling up in a comfortable spot and spending the day forgetting about your own problems. I hadn't expected any different by now, but book number five Call To Arms has exactly the same quality I have become used to. Strong, solid and engaging writing, excellent character development, an interesting plot... This detective thriller has it all. I really liked that we see a vulnerable side in various characters; this makes them only more human. The characters feel like old friends and you cannot help but feel and root for them as they try to figure out what really happened as they reopen a ten year old old case. It was interesting to see them all working together to rescue one of their own... The plot and plot twists are well executed as always, and I definitely didn't guess the final revelations! Call To Arms is another excellent addition to this series and I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book. I can highly recommend this series if you enjoy the genre!

Basically, you can't go wrong when you pick up one of the Detective Kay Hunter books. This series has been consistently strong so far and Call To Arms is no exception. Less fast-paced and violent than the previous book, Call To Arms instead focuses more on the main characters we have become to love, show a sensitive side and just how well they work together as a team. The cold case they investigate is another good one, with many twists, secrets and turns to keep things intriguing. Things are getting personal, and digging up the truth might hurt more than one person. Fascinated yet? You won't regret reading Call To Arms or the other books in the series if you can appreciate a good detective thriller.

What I appreciated about this installment, was that Kay wasn't necessarily looking for a murderer. She just wanted to find a way to help her captain and ended up uncovering all kinds of fun stuff.
It was also nice to see Kay get herself sorted as the one totally in charge for once.

Of course I plan to continue this series. I'm totally hooked now.

Following the events of the last book, Hell To Pay Kay is only returning back to work and is therefore on light duties – much to Kay’s annoyance! DI Devon Sharp is still suspended so Kay decides that she’ll clear both her and Sharp’s names. So up to this point I have said that the books can be read as standalones but better to know the background however with Call To Arms it is my opinion that you need to have read Hell To Pay as the books are intrinsically linked. Trust me, this is no hardship as the series is fabulous and so quick to read as you do not want to put them down once started!

Kay starts relooking at a cold case which may help Sharp’s case if she can prove that it wasn’t fully investigated – a motorcyclist died following, what appears to be a accident whereby he skidded and lost control of his motorcycle. At the time, Sharp was working for the military police however as this happened away from barracks, he was not directly involved in the investigation into this young army private's death. However the more digging that Kay and the team do, the more complicated the investigation becomes, and not just because it involves a senior colleague….that is all I am saying about the plot!!

As with previous books in the series, this is brilliantly written – we see a different side of Kay and the team as the cold case is ten years old. Forensic techniques have moved on a lot since then, also they face issues of finding old witnesses who have either moved on, died or simply forgotten the details of the events at that time.

Another brilliant read in this gripping series.
