3.5 rounded up to 4 because a rating of 2.67 seems very harsh for this book, in my opinion (seems like the rating is more for the narrator than the book itself).

I’m a sucker for a good cover but this didn’t live up to its art direction :( Disappointing in so many ways, I want to write something nice but this one is lacking in the positive column. I don’t think it’s a matter of taste, I think this one is just a bit of a stinker.

I wonder if these dystopian novels don’t hit me quite as hard or serve up the same nuance as they could if I were reading the words rather than listening to them? Regardless of whether that’s true or not, this one was just alright to me. It had potential but it also fell quite short in some areas for me. I think it had the hallmarks of highly provoking concepts but they weren’t fleshed out in ways that made them especially impactful. Instead, I continually wondered how the MC could so completely lack self-awareness and how he could stay with someone as absolutely deplorable as his wife. And not recognize his own family members’ handwriting? At any rate, the concepts of privacy, and the blur between reality and the power of perception through virtual worlds provoked some interesting thought. The MC’s unwillingness to think past himself really hampered the power of the book though.

This book was weird, and I have absolutely no idea why I liked it, but I did.

The book feels unfinished somehow. When it ended I was thinking it was some glitch in the audiobook, but it really was the end. Sounded like one of those tv shows that gets canned mid way because the viewers got really tired of the protagonist and were tuning out after a few episodes.
