I felt about this like I felt about reading Derf's weekly comic in The City--gotta read it, probably gonna chuckle, definitely gonna be like "what a weirdo!" We'll never be woke enough about the insane damage of throwaway culture, and _Trashed_ plays unique cards in jabbing at our complacency and getting us to pay better attention. The cover art and subtitle are huge draws. Lotsa crude humor and swearing. YA and adults should read it, will definitely chuckle, will definitely think that Derf is a weirdo, and will come away more aware and might throw away a little less.

Satisfying and disgusting, all at once. I recommend everyone read this book and then do a self evaluation.
I also want to know why we are still living in our own filth when, once again, Scandinavia has it all figured out????

What a fun book. It's a graphic novel and nonfiction! I learned a lot about where all our trash goes and I really liked the story about the garbage men. I certainly will be looking at garbage men in a different light now. Some of the stuff they pick up is quite gross but the story was told in a comical way. Highly recommend if you want to learn more about this profession.

A sometimes gross but always fascinating look at our trash and the people who have to manage it.

I must first start by saying that this book is not completely nonfiction. The story is based roughly on Backderf’s life, but the story is overall fiction. However, the nonfiction aspect of the book lies in multi-genre aspect of this graphic novel. While Backderf tells you the story of JB’s life as a garbageman, he includes information about the state of garbage in the United States. The mix of JB’s story with information from Columbia University and an EPA report really makes this text so unique. Backderf does a great job balancing the fiction component (filled with dark humor and stark reality) with the information that puts everything in perspective.

At first I was bored and had trouble finding a plot, but as I continued to push through I found that I was actually enjoying the book. It's a bit mundane, but filled with unbelievable statistics and sarcastic humor.

Backderf is one of this generation's greatest visual storytellers. I never thought I'd learn so much about sanitation and disposal.
