Thanks to NetGalley and Tor Nightfire for the ARC!
I read Maeve Fly last year and was obsessed, so my expectations for American Rapture were high. This was horrifying in a totally different way, and did not let me down! It’s a coming of age story with a heaping portion of religious trauma, apocalyptic action and gruesome horror moments. I truly cared about our main cast of characters, especially the sweet dog.

"HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE LAST MOMENTS BEFORE THE WORLD ENDS: You don't." (p. 79)
Having your worldview completely shatter is one thing, but doing it while the world as you know it collapses around you complicates things even more. C.J. Leede doesn't just deliver a blood-soaked, post-apocalyptic horror novel; she's created a gut-wrenchingly beautiful coming-of-age story that examines religious and generational trauma, grief, shame, morality, identity, freedom of choice, and so much more. I was left speechless yet wanting more. I can't stop thinking about the final scene of this book.
I wish I could have given the book a full 4-star rating or higher, but there were certain pacing issues with action or dialog that I wish had been handled differently. Some scenes felt almost too identical to ones that had happened previously. With that being said, I did appreciate Leede's ability to show little signs of the apocalypse before our sheltered main character was even made aware of the severity of this perverse influenza. I also wasn't the biggest fan of the potential adult-minor relationship between our main character and one of the other characters, but it, fortunately, did not play out to anything extreme.
As a warning, A LOT happens in this book. It is very much a gory, splatterpunk-y read. While it does have a touching storyline, there are a lot of potentially triggering and unsettling depictions, so please check trigger warnings before reading.

thank you to NetGalley for an ARC.
This book.... like WOW. I read her first book, so going into this one I really didn't know what to expect but, she did not disappoint
This book is just as good as her first book if not better.
16 year old Sophie is coming of age and of course its during a virus outbreak. Her was raised in a small town and Catholic, plus has basically been sheltered her whole life. In this story we follow Sophie and watch her struggle with what she's been taught, and what she finds along the way. Sophie meets all kinds of amazing characters along the way on her journey.
I love first person POV so listening and seeing her thoughts beliefs be challenged, was a journey or twist and turns for me. The book was paced extremely well but, CJ broke my heart with the ending!!!
If you want to feel a ton of emotions, then I highly highly recommend reading this!!!
