I received an advance copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

As the Katy Perry song says, "Shut up and put your money where your mouth is. That's what you get for waking up in Vegas."

When former high school loves Ellie and Connor do just that, they also discover that in addition to raging hangovers, they picked up some extra hardware: wedding rings. They're eager to get a quickie divorce, but a family emergency back home pushes that back a bit. Add in a major renovation project, a manipulative grandmother, and four Elvis impersonators, and "The first year is the hardest" takes on a whole new meaning.

I wanted to like this book. I wanted to like this book so much. I'm a sucker for second-chance romance (blame Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth for that one), and the book started out incredibly strong. The first chapter was a hoot, and I was ready to settle in for a quick, fun read.

And then, it just got...long. Everything that happened to the characters was either based on completely improbable coincidence or their refusal to see something that was right in front of them. But, no worries, because every issue ended up being resolved with a quick snap of the fingers. There wasn't really any growth between them, either. Even Connor's major hang-up that caused him to leave Ellie brokenhearted on that long-ago Prom night is resolved with a quick phone call and a sweet little bow.

Finally, the ending came out of absolute nowhere. It felt like Russell had told all of her story and then realized that it was way too short. Instead of fleshing out the issues that the characters had faced so far and adding in some vitally-needed character development, she tacks on something else entirely which consumes the last third of the book.

Received this book through Goodreads Giveaway.

This was really cute, fun read and I'm not usually not the biggest fan of romance but I did enjoy this book. I liked the involvement of the 4 Elvis characters, it added another element to it that I didn't expect. I rated the book as a 3 though because I felt like a few plot points were glossed over. I never really understood why they broke up in the first place, I was waiting for the big reveal but when it came it was like 'oh that's it? Surely there must be more?' It felt like the beginning was really strong but the ending was rushed.

Lately, I’ve been trying to get into the whole married by mistake/love in Vegas stories. To this date, I’ve only read one of those stories that I have truly loved. I saw Married by Midnight on Net Galley and loved the blurb! Exactly what I was looking for and Gerri Russell is a new author to me so I thought I’d give it a try.

Ellie Hawthorne is in Vegas trying to revive her failing event planning career. One to many tequilas later she wakes up in bed with some strange man. Actually, it turns out to be someone she knows very well, her high school ex-boyfriend Connor Grayson. To top it all off, they were married at an Elvis wedding chapel.

Connor Grayson is just as confused as Ellie when he wakes up. However, things take a quick change when he receives a phone call that his grandmother is in the hospital. Connor’s grandmother has a dying wish to see her grandson married. Reality is, even though neither of them remembers, Ellie and Connor are married. Connor asks Ellie to keep up the ruse and stay married just until his grandmother leaves the hospital.

The story was great right up until that point. Once the meddling grandmother is brought in and the four Elvis impersonators, I lost interest. If it would have continued with two people falling back in love with each other and the grandmother would have not been butting in, I think the story would have been different for me. I was really put off that these two very intelligent human beings NEVER put two and two together to figure out that someone was trying to force them to be together. And the Elvis impersonators? The author totally lost me on that one.

The one thing I did enjoy was the little twist at the end. That was a surprise and I never saw it coming. All and all, I enjoyed the beginning and the end of this book but feel the storyline should have gone differently.

DNF at 35%.

I L.O.V.E. a married by mistake story so when I saw this on NetGalley and read the blurb, look at the cover! It screamed read me.

The start is a little like that Cameron Diaz classic film What Happens in Vegas, Elle Hawthorne wakes up in a Vegas hotel room after one too many tequilas to find she is in bed with her high school boyfriend, the one who broke her heart. Not only that but she has a shiny gold ring on her finger.

Connor Grayson is equally as shocked as Elle, but when his beloved grandmother is in hospital and bemoaning that she will die before her favourite grandson gets married he asks Elle to continue their deception for just a little longer.

So that's the book I wanted to read. Unfortunately there was also a quartet of elderly Elvis impersonators (who happened to be friends with Connor's grandmother) and Connor's grandmother was probably the character who led me to create the "irritating seniors" tag for my Goodreads books!

If you like books about hapless couples being led around by the nose by opinionated and scheming senior citizens then I think you will love this - it wasn't what I wanted.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I won this book as a FirstRead.

When Ellie Hawthorne heads to Las Vegas to network for her event planning business, the last thing she expects is to wake up married to Connor Grayson, her ex-boyfriend from high school, in a midnight ceremony at an Elvis chapel. Both agree it was a mistake that needs corrected immediately, but Connor gets a call that his grandma has had a heart attack. In her last conversation with Connor, his grandma said how she hopes to see him settled down before she dies, so Connor convinces Ellie to keep up the marriage until his grandma has recovered. The four Elvises follow the couple home to Seattle, intent to make sure Connor and Ellie realize they really should stay married.

I typically love second-chance romances, but this book was a little too over-the-top for me. It felt like the plot belonged in a telenovela. Without the grandma, the Elvises, and the ex-girlfriend, the story could have been good. I don't think I will read more books by this author.

This book had a strong start. Two people, waking up in bed in Vegas, discovering they're married. Even worse: they once were highschool sweethearts but have not seen each other for 11 years after something happened at prom night.

Connor and Ellie are horrified but he asks her to accompany him to his grandmother who has had a heart attack. They have to pretend. But ofcourse, old feelings flare up and misunderstandings are cleared.

This book was so full of strange coincidences! The writing style was also a bit choppy. Still a nice read though.
