I absolutely loved this book. once I finished listening to the audiobook, I immediately wanted to buy a physical or ebook copy to appreciate the writing one more time. Louise Erdrich’s storytelling truly shines in this multi-generational tale, with its unique and unforgettable characters. Definitely my cup of tea.

I love Louise Erdrich and read at least one of her books each year. This one I enjoyed, but I definitely felt that it was one of her earliest works.

I came across this title as I was looking for a book that came out the year I was born (1986) for a summer reading challenge from my local indie bookstore. I’ve always meant to read more by Louise Erdrich, so this seemed like a perfect opportunity.

This is definitely a fair mix of character development book and plot although the plot itself feels mostly like vignettes. The characters were interesting and unexpected. There were darkly funny moments that will stick with me. This definitely made me want to read more from Erdrich’s backlist.
