Theogony, Works and Days, Shield by Hesiod

I thought I'd class things up with a little Ancient Greek poetry, ya'll. I read Works and Days, and am saving the other two poems for later. Works and Days is addressed to Hesiod's estranged brother (who apparently cheated him out of his inheritance after their father died). After setting things up with an overview of the Gods and Justice, Hesiod lays out how to be a good man, a successful farmer, and some specifics of lucky and unlucky days on the calendar. Works and Days doesn't have the narrative fun of the Iliad or the Odyssey, but Hesiod makes up for that with a look at everyday life in circa 700 BC Greece, and some subtle digs at his brother.

Jeg vet ikke hvorfor Hesiod advarer mot å la kvinner som pynter bakenden sin forføre deg, men de er tydeligvis ute etter å romstere i låven din. Caveat fictor.

Hesiod is pretty cool, because he mostly writes about everyday people and everyday life, making him the antithesis to Homer. Honestly, the story about Heracles was most exciting, but Works and Days was interesting enough, as was Theogony. I don't know if I recommend it, but it's not the worst thing I've read for my classical civilizations course, which is always a plus.
