Having heard that Monica Heisey was hired to be a writer for my favorite TV show, Schitt’s Creek, predominantly because of this humor book she wrote in 2015, I was intrigued. What traits did this book possess that granted her such an honor? I knew it had to be good. I was not disappointed.
Monica filled her book with adorable, pun-filled drawings (the “hippo (critical)” one is my favorite); beautiful poetry that celebrates cheese or laments childhood body image struggles or other delightful things; fun quizzes that help determine whether you are Zooey Deschanel or if you should or shouldn’t text someone back; an extremely compelling story woven through email correspondence with a pitch perfect punchline concerning the inarguably revolting cologne Axe; and many many tips, essays, and advice for millennial women everywhere.
It was so clear as I was reading why Monica was cold-hired (is that something people say? Probably not) to write for Schitt’s Creek, because amongst all of the hilarity, she inserts wise and serious bits about how to properly break up with someone or about what exactly the word “flattering” means when it comes to women’s clothes. While nearly every line in Schitt’s Creek is a joke, thoughtful and weighty themes (such as FAMILY. And ACCEPTANCE. And LOVE. And SEX POSITIVITY. etc.) are layered within the show -- just like Monica’s book!
You will chuckle. You will nod vigorously in agreement. You will snort. You will cover your mouth in shock. You will wonder what on earth PEI is, do a quick google and discover it means Prince Edward Island, and then two paragraphs later find that she answered that question for you and you researched for no reason. You will wish that getting a job is as easy as that satire suggests. You will wonder when you last washed your bra. Mostly though, you will long to be friends with Monica Heisey.
Also, the essay about pizza. Wow.

I just gave 3 hrs of my life to reading internet humour and it was so good! a couple of winces but a greater number of chuckles and giggles and a few 'laughed till I leaked tears'. I remain convinced that Canadians are inherently funnier comedians.

Pretty middle of the road here. It did make me smile, and I told my boyfriend about a few of the funny parts. It’s a bit predictable, but I guess humor should be familiar.

Do you like real talk and burritos? Then you will like this book.
No, but really - this has been one of my favourite reads of the year. It is "laugh aloud even though you are in public" funny.
