Iceland might very well be my favorite place and this book allows Iceland to be a character. This would be a great plane or pool read.

I still really like this series, but dear god, this book needed an edit. I just thought we could have had a shorter, snappier version of the story. While enjoying the ride, I do get annoyed when I start thinking, do we really need to be here still?
And also, Thora (Þóra) really needs to brush up on her forensic law. There were parts of this book which were just uncomfortable for me to read due to the complete disregard Thora took to forensics that were possibly compromising her clients.
But besides this, it was a fun little romp in rural Iceland with a dabble in the supernatural but mainly a good whodunnit. And you have to really stuff that up for me not to enjoy that.

My Soul To Take
By Yrsa Siguroardottir
Translated by Bernard Scudder & Anna Yates
2009
William Morrow
Set in modern day Iceland, in this absorbing page turner Thora Gudmundsdottir is a lawyer hired to represent the owner of a New Age spa and resort who wants to sue the previous owner because they feel the place is haunted and were not told. Thora immediately leaves for a stay at the spa and is drawn into a murder investigation of the owner, Jonas, accused of the murder of an architect. The mutilated body is found on the beach with no real clues. Then a second body is found.....This is a book that will keep you guessing. The plot is powerful and seductive. Multiple twists and clues dropped, but the truth is not revealed until the last few chapters. Excellent noir mystery, the details of Iceland's culture and landscape added much to this thriller.
Recommended.

I like the character of Thora herself, and Sigurdardottir is a great writer, but this novel was a bit 'meh' and it wrapped up in a hurried, clumsy way. I prefer the later books in this series, which are much darker and much more deeply invested in Icelandic history and culture.

Honestly one of the most confusing reads? I had no idea what was happening half the time and the main characters lack backstory. Otherwise it’s not too bad overall.

Opened so strongly with a horrific murder of a child. Then it fast-forwards from the forties to the present day, changes to a “jokey” tone and devolved into a confusing plot and cast of suspects, centered around an annoying protagonist. Irritating narration on the audiobook.
