I'll be honest and say that my rating is harsher then I would usually do.  I want to rate this book a 4. I really enjoyed it and the world finally had an added level of complexity that I was hoping for in the rest of the series. The reason I want to be more harsh is that I wish that the first three books in the series had a bit more world building to substantiate the ending.  (Don't worry I won't have any spoilers in this).  It almost felt like the author realized that they had some plot gaps and added lore to fill it in.  I don't think that is actually the case. There is enough hints about what was going on in the earlier books to show that there was some intention behind it.

That being said it is the best spin on Arthurian legend that I have read in a long time and I will definitely be rereading this series again in the future.

Thank you so much for the ARC !!

This is the fourth and final book of this series... so far... I will explain more in a little bit.

First off, I love this series! I enjoy the original story of Merlin and Arthur so much as a kid, to now find all of the adaptations of the legendary story with added little twists that you otherwise never would have even come up with. Morgan was dealt a horrible hand in her childhood. To be next in line to the throne and then cast away all because her bloodline contained fae blood is a cruel fact. but I have enjoyed watching/reading her grow into the powerful being that she is by the end of this book. Morgan also made incredible friends along the way and they stick with her right until the end with her battle to bring her real father's horrible reign to an end.

In this final book, Morgan seemed to know more and more answers to things that we were left completely in the dark about. Just all of a sudden she had these memories coming back and knew who people were and where entrances were to the secret castle, etc... Having these explained as to how she knew would have been beneficial to the story, but it isn't even attempted. There is however lots of action, and she learns how to control more of her powers, which makes the fighting all the more intense. It is an action packed novel that kept me on the edge of my seat!! There were also two other portions of this book that had my emotions so out of wack... Medra, how and why did she grow so fast? and she ended up having so many problems at the castle due to her being different... That was a rollercoaster every time the chapter changed to her POV. Then there is the self-sacrifice of Nightclaw... that good boy deserved so much more.. This whole scene made me cry. It was written so well that you were witnessing it happening, he fought so hard to protect her even when she told him not to... I don't know how she had the strength to go on..

I will say that there are some things that I was not to happy to have read in this final book.. but I also understand that the author might not have had anything else for that character.. What happened to Rychel was totally unexpected and random. I think her character deserves a little side story so that we can see what she went through and what happened to her.

There are unanswered or unresolved issues at the end of the book still.. the undead children wasn't resolved and we don't know if Draven and his people will still struggle to have children or are both curses broken with the items of three being destroyed? Will al of these be answered in the spin off series coming in November...? This is the juicy little tidbit I mentioned at the beginning... There is another series coming that will have characters from this world in it, but we barely have any information on who it is about right now.. I know who I hope it is..

Briar Boleyn truly has magic herself when creating these stories. What a gripping and truly enthralling conclusion to the Blood of a Fae series. I discovered this series through NetGalley when Briar posted the series up in anticipation for the release of this book and I was so thankful to have gotten the ARC for the release of Knight of the Goddess.

The story is the perfect balance of a dark fantasy with topics that do warrant trigger warnings, so be sure to check them ahead of time if you have any. The bond between Morgan and Draven is one I will be dreaming of for ages, the obstacles they faced together and apart in the first three books feels so rewarding seeing the two of them finally be together and accepting of one another. That throne scene had me blushing the entire time!

Knight of the Goddess gives a tale of what Morgan and her loved ones must do to finally defeat their great enemy. The story is written with gripping prose to engage the reader and keep you wanting more but with easy to read story telling so it's not confusing for those who may just be entering the fantasy genre. It's a wonderful conclusion and I cannot believe the story has come to a close, I will be sure to keep a close eye out for anything Briar releases in the future.

Thank you NetGalley and Briar Boleyn for this ARC!

Hawl was next to leave. “I shall dream of blood and snapping bones,” they said, sounding happier than they had all week. “A satisfying battle.”

4.25⭐ rounded up to 5. What a great ending to a captivating series.

Note: I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for honest feedback.

❤️ Fast pace and high stakes
❤️ Animal companions
❤️ Character and relationship development
❌ Cringey sexual violence
❌ Unnecessary deaths

Trigger Warnings: violence and torture, blood and gore, death, war, public sex, cannibalism, abduction, abuse and death (including of animals and children), trauma, etc. (check the list at the end of the book before you dive in).

Plot:

King Arthur is dead and the war between Pendrath and its neighbouring kingdoms has finally ended. But the world faces an even greater peril, as an old evil is stirring and threatening to destroy everything in its path. Morgan and Draven must choose between staying behind to protect their vulnerable family, rushing to their allies’ aid, or facing the threat head-on.

This book was fast-paced and immersive, with high stakes and great reveals, but no tedious info dumps. It was definitely hard to put down! However, I feel like only one of the character deaths made a lot of sense and drove the plot, while others felt rushed or like they were added for shock value. I also felt like leaving Medra behind without a more decent plan, and making an outsider regent, made no sense whatsoever.

Characters:
No surprises here: the animal companions were my favourite characters, again! I’d seriously read a novella on Hawl and the bearkins. I MEAN, who wouldn’t love a whole book on a snarky, gender-fluid, talking master-chef warrior bear? Sign me up! Odessa was also a nice surprise. I don’t feel like we saw much of her in the previous books, but it was great to get to know her better and I loved her interactions with Medra.

I wasn’t a fan of Morgan throughout the series, but she grew on me in this one. She was a strong, yet flawed character who struggles with self-doubt and contradictions. I loved, loved, loved Draven, but some of his lines made me cringe. I know, I know, the dark romance genre glosses over all kinds of red flags, but I really can’t deal with she-asked-for-it quotes like “If you start this, you should know I won’t be able to stop and I can’t be gentle.” I also found that these additions felt a little forced, uncharacteristic for Draven. Other than that, I really loved Morgan and Draven’s relationship and how it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Just like it’s great for characters to have flaws, I think relationships (especially the main ones) should also face some ups and downs and come out strong. It makes the characters more relatable, and the relationships feel more genuine, believable. The same applies to Morgan/Lancelet, and Crescent/Medra.

Writing:
Well written. Evocative, with vivid descriptions, great atmosphere, and top-quality banter! I’d be curious to read more from Boleyn.

(Ok, maybe it’s just me, or maybe it’s a non-native English speaker thing, but do grown women really use the word “belly” to refer to their midsection? Especially in bed? It sounded weird to me, aha!)

What a perfectly heartbreaking, fitting end to the series.
I can not believe all the ways this book broke my heart, and I loved every word.
We lose people we love, we lose people we hate, and hearts will be broken, but everything happens for a reason.
Draven and Morgan embrace who they are meant to be to the world and each other. I love that the spice did not overpower the plot and instead fit right in.
Read this if you love epic quests, hidden truths, and unending belief in what is right.
Sad to see it end!
I received an advanced reader chippy but these thoughts and feelings are my own

"Be everything you truly are. That's all I'll ever ask of you, my silver one."

I kind of don't want to write this review because it's the last one of this series.
