Having no prior knowledge of the Sami culture and lifestyle (I googled lavvu, yoik, and repeatedly used the novel’s map of 19th century Scandinavia), this was a deeply engrossing and propelling read. Fascinating, wounded, characters that were also so tender and vulnerable. I loved it.

This started really slowly. It was a slow burn though, that ended with a roaring conclusion. Everything is not wrapped up neatly, but I learned a lot about a portion of history and culture that I had never experienced. The writing kept me engaged and following the characters. Read this if you like Jack London or Laura Ingles Wilder books.

Fascinating book about the Sami people , their way of life and beliefs. A very unusual book about unfamiliar topics, but all the more engrossing for that. Recommended
