So I went to a Christina Lauren event, and Brittainy Cherry was the ~in conversation with~ person. I loved her as a person at that event, so I decided to put some of her books on hold at the library. This is the first I’ve read by her, and I loved it!
I really like the characters. I saw some other reviewers were struggling with Alex because he’s an asshole in the beginning, and yes he is, but also he’s an asshole in the way that I too have been when you’re having a shitty day/week/month, and you take it out on people who are in there at the wrong time in your life/moment. Of course it’s not healthy/right, but we’re people. Alex and Yara feel like real people because they have flaws but also acknowledge and grow from them. Excited to read the next book.

I love this story! To be honest, I almost DNF-ed this because the loathing-each-other stage was too much for me. But it picked up eventually and went great from that point onwards. I read the mixtape first and loved it so I read this one. I liked how Yara and Alejandro were opposites. In the beginning, I was like, “Damn, she's so nice, so wtf is this grumpy guy walking all over her?” I was so mad. Hahaha! But yeah, there are a lot of interesting characters here. Cole got what he deserved in the end and it made me so happy because karma's a bitch. Goldie and Mr. Black, you both will be with me for life. Teresa and Yara’s dad were a delight. Yara’s sisters were interesting, too and I can’t wait to read their stories. I understood Cole’s mom, but her thinking was disgusting and that kind of parenting would make a criminal like Cole. Oh, the pop culture references like Peter Parker or Lewis Capaldi’s Wish You the Best MV was fun! Thank you, Brittany, for this book. 💖✨

"You were never fake for me"- Alejandro "Alex" Ramirez

Tropes:
- Fake Dating
- Grumpy/Sunshine
- Small Town Romance
- Slow Burn

This comptempary romance book follows Yara and Alex on their journey to find love. Yara is a bubbly owner of a doggy daycare and a recent divorcee from the town's sheriff. She inherited the daycare from the previous owner. Alex is new to town and is opening a 5 star restaurant per the request of his great aunt. He is not the kindest person to talk to and really hates the small town that has not been the most welcoming to him. As Yara tries to welcome him into the neighborhood, they get into a heated argument. This fight causes them to break the dog water bowl that Yara took her time to make. So their relationships starts off pretty rocky. Unfortunately, his great aunt passes away before he can fully open the restaurant and she leaves him a feisty little dog so he won't be alone. He is way over his head and needs to enlist Yara into helping him with the dog. Yara suggests that they fake date because she needs help showing her psycho ex that she has moved on. They go through their process of dating and finding love when you least expect it.

This book is a cute slow burn for anyone who loves small town romances. I loved the plot of the story and defiantly didn't see that twist coming in the end. Now, by the time we got 40% through the book I was a little annoyed with Yara. She was truly a pushover and would have never stood up for her business if it wasn't for Alex pushing her. The way everyone treated her was heartbreaking and I struggled to keep reading. The plot was the main reason I continued reading because I needed to know how it ended. One of my favorite things about this book were the quotes and the advice Yara's dad and Alex's great aunt would give them.

"A donde vayas, yo voy"
