Super recomendable

This memoir helps the reader to understand the suffering and anguish the people of North Korea go through everyday in order to survive.
As Yeonmi mentions in the book, most of the Westerners believe that North Korea is a miserable country run by an odd dictator with bad hair and nuclear weapons. This memoir makes you realise how North Koreans are living in extreme poverty, brainwashed from birth to believe that the Kims as gods who can read your mind and control the weather. A country where it takes just one family member to “misbehave” for the whole family to be punished or sent to reeducation prison camps.
Escaping into China to be human trafficked and sold as a “wife” to Chinese farmers or being repatriated that would lead to execution. What Yeonmi went through by the age of 15 is harrowing and I am amazed at her courage and willpower to live. I am so glad that her family is reunited and wish them all the best in life.
