I really enjoyed this book, but it’s hard to say why it’s not a five star for me. It started really slow because we got to know all the characters, and while I enjoyed that, it felt like the plot on the back cover revealed the plot 50% in to the book so it took a while to learn new things about the plot. I loved all of these characters and the book/blood magic and found it all fascinating. I would love to read more about this magic world and these characters but the book tied things together nicely. The plot and plot devices felt a little YA I think even in this adult book.

This was a lot more enjoyable than the title gives (random I know but the title turned me off for so long). I liked the premise of the world and the mystery of the parental figures. I figured out most things before the main characters did but it was still fun to read

This was such an unexpected gem. Came for the magical library, stayed for the characters and plot twists.

Fun book! Definitely got more interesting near the end—I struggled to stay focused at first.

The bits of romance were refreshing in their twists.
There wasn’t really a “main” couple. I appreciated that Esther and Nicholas didn’t get together, and that Joanna and Collins only kissed pretty close to the end (and then nothing else happened until the last chapter). Esther and Pearl, of course, couldn’t do much for most of the book since Pearl was only present in the beginning, but it was sweet how that plot was wrapped up in the end.

Definitely recommend as a light, fantasy book with some queer and family themes.

It was an entertaining read, I liked the overall plot and the writing was fairly good. I wasn’t super invested in the characters, except Nicholas who found funny and confident in a self-deprecating way. The other characters weren’t bad, just not developed to their full potential. Specially Joanna and Collins, who were supporting characters disguising as contributing main characters. I appreciate I didn’t have to eye roll their “love story” because it was left in the start of an attraction and potential of more. This was a comfy thriller that I wouldn’t mind readings a follow up story, but it’s perfectly fine as a standalone.

Enjoyable premise, could be quite graphic at times. Would have liked to see a little more with regards to the magic system.

A really interesting magic world, with a great cast of characters. Nicholas was annoying at first (spoilt rich kid), but he grows on you. I loved Joanna and Esther. And all of the MCs lives were a bit of a raw deal, which was thankfully all resolved happily by the end.

Also, this should be tagged by storygraph as an LGBT+ book, as Esther is bisexual and in a relationship with a woman.
