I thought about you before doing anything, tried to make you proud with everything that I did. I thought, “If you were here, and I did this, would you nod? Would you be willing to praise me a little, say I did okay?” Day after day I thought about this, until it had permeated my very bones, become second nature. That’s why, as time went on, I never even realized—
That as the days had passed, I’d grown into the you I held in my heart.
This book having the MOST unbelievably horny, five (5) page long foot massage scene was not in my 2024 bingo card

Craft - I struggle to critique translated craft as I know there is a lot that I am missing by not reading the story in its original language. That being said, the translation is well done, the prose is easy to follow, and in this book especially light and humorous. There's a very strong sense of voice and the distant third-person narration is always fun to me, though would certainly not be for everyone. Conflict - This conflict in this book is very internal as the characters really are fighting themselves, their past(s), and their feelings. It's a nice breath after such heaviness in the previous books and while it isn't as globally big or threatening, does still feel central and important to the characters themselves. Context - The themes of "purity" and "filth" continue in this book and become clearer as the prose turns more personal, and the lighter plot and brighter world really allow the reader (and the characters) a moment to breathe without losing momentum. It's a needed release to lower the stakes without dropping, only changing the tension. The world is still a wild one and it's nice to see the kinder parts of the cultivation world (before everything inevitably goes to shit). Characters - This is where this story truly shines. I adore each and every character in this book, from their quirks to their frustrations. They are the ones that draw out and guide the narrative forward and truly feel like whole, round people with their own struggles and flaws. It makes for very entertaining scenes when everyone is together and truly heart-wrenching (and heart-throbbing) moments for the more emotional and... spicier scenes, shall we say. They're each so fun and engaging, not just the leads but also the side characters, and make the story so readable. They're also all hilarious and ridiculous and dumb, and I love them.
