Loved the further development here, especially with how the world would realistically deal with the aftermath of the Collapse. The arguments felt real, and you could see where tensions from all sides/socioeconomic groups stemmed from. 

With that being said, the romance could definitely be written better. I am not a big fan of miscommunication tropes or of people in a relationship not being able to talk to each other. 

The love triangle (if you could even call it that) between Zane and Vin was so forced and not believable at all. The shifting perspectives from Vin to Zane actually probably confused things even more and would have been better if we didn’t see things from Zane’s POV.


The plot twists were great in this book.
Finding out about OreSeur’s death had me floored. And revisiting Kwaan’s words carved in stone was incredible

This is my least favourite book in the era 1 trilogy—which isn’t to say that it’s a bad book! I still very much love this, but compared to The Final Empire, it does feel quite slow in some parts. Specifically, the Straff subplots kinda take up more time than feels warranted in relation to the actual relevance and payoff of that little arc there. 
That being said, all the other character and plot arcs are great. I have so many feelings about these characters, I wanna scream. The Sanderlanche is as wild as ever, and god I love them all so much 😭❤️

The creativity behind this world and magic system continues to keep me hooked, and I really never know what’s going to happen.

Vin and Elends relationship felt a little unrealistic to me, which made it hard to get all that invested.  I found myself rooting for them all the same.
This book felt slightly more plot driven than character driven, though the characters all had well developed arcs.  There was a bit of a lull in the middle of the book for me while we
waited around for the armies and focused on politics
but when it picks back up it PICKS BACK UP.

Zane’s character and his particular brand of insanity was riveting. His internal monologue sent a shiver down my spine but had me glued to the page. I also appreciated that despite his insanity it was clear that he was a  better person than his father. The juxtaposition of the two, often one right after the other, had me in my psychology bag.
 

My favorite relationship to watch grow was between Vin and OreSeur. It felt like it got the screen time it needed
and by subtle increments they came to trust each other as individuals.  Which is  why I was GAGGED when it turned out  OreSeur was the enemy Kadra. I still loved the moments of tenderness from both sides after the reveal of the betrayal and I sincerely hope the kadra comes back in book 3.


I spent the whole book guessing who the mole was, deciphering what was going on with the well of ascension, and theorizing over every mystery Brandon Sanderson gave us.  I’m happy to say I did not see anything coming. The whole end was an avalanche of plot twists that left me a withered husk of a human.

Loved this book. Perfect amount of slower and faster chapters. I cannot wait to start the last book in this trilogy to find out what happens next.
