How a girl with a lot of spunk copes with living with her prim and proper aunts far from home. I'm not the right audience, but still worth knowing what was written about girls through the years...

Rebecca is one of seven children, and she is sent to live with her two unmarried aunts. This means her mother will have one less mouth to feed, and Rebecca will have a chance to be educated. Published in 1903, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm veers between feeling extremely outdated, and being lively and memorable. Rebecca is a little like Anne of Green Gables: she makes the best of bad situations, and charms those who appreciate her good heart and wit. But while she's not as daring as Anne, her loving nature and passion for friendship, books and helpfulness can charm even the coldest modern heart. There is a lot of religious in this book, and the arrival of missionaries talking about "heathens" is very unfortunate, but mostly this a good mixture of believable growing pains with descriptions of country life. Good for the long dark hours of the mind.

Sweet, but bore many a resemblance to Anne of Green Gables, and I think I preferred Anne.

This is a terribly underrated kids book that is truly wonderful! I was in Barnes & Noble yesterday and there was not a single copy among the children's classics, and that's a pity.
Rebecca came before the more popular Anne of Green Gables. It's a splendid story that deserves to be read aloud to girls everywhere today.
