The Wife of Gods was a good mystery. I think this is a great book to start with if you are new to the genre. This book made me want to update my video "Mystery for Beginners." The MC, the detective was a determined detective from Accra. He followed every lead and every trace. Although he had some anger towards particularly abusive people; for the most part, he had his life together. The MC was forced to revisit ghosts and places that reminded him of his past. This writing of this book reminded of me historical mysteries that were written in the early 1900s. I honestly truly enjoyed that feel the most. I think that made me like the book the most. The book sets you up to think that the obvious suspects are guilty only for me to think differently towards the end of the book.

I definitely want to follow this detective series. Dawson is very lovable, his flaws are fully on display as the reader is immersed in his impressive mind for most of the novel. Loved the depictions of daily life in Accra and rural Ghana. I devoured this in one sitting. Quartey's writing is engaging and natural. It helps the story move along quickly without feeling clipped or forced.
Go in informed, Quartey depicts some very real daily trauma in this book. Content warnings are for some heavy scenes.
Rating was lower for me because of the formulaic plot - not a bad thing in itself, just my preferences showing. Like with many formulaic murder mysteries, however, there is so much pain going on that major events and characters undergoing extreme trauma feel glossed over in favor of moving the narrative forward. It leaves the impression that some evils are depicted here only to showcase Dawson's virtues...which never sits well with me. That is a flaw with most detective series I have read, though, and may be due to this being the novel in which Quartey is establishing Dawson's character. Overall, I want to read more!

Picking this up was an attempt for me to see if I would enjoy a detective novel if it was set outside the US. I still didn’t jive well with the tone. It’s no fault of the book or author, crime books just aren’t for me.
