yeah sadly i don’t think this book is my style. i thought it was! very much so at the beginning! but as i’ve read more i’ve realised this (obv) focuses a lot on rowing which…. i don’t care about. at all. i am not a sports fan. i like playing sports but watching it? no thanks.
when chapters were about joe & his home life i was having fun, but now the book is about the meat of rowing and i couldn’t care less ❤️‍🩹

Obviously I wanted to like this book. It had been recommended many times. It’s also Seattle history. But I just couldn’t get into it. I finished it because I felt I had to. I think the author described the weather for too long and too often.

I wanted to like this so much more than I did. Its my favorite kind of story: American underdogs beating the odds to show the world what America can do. Unfortunately both the formatting and pacing makes this a super slow and difficult read. The interesting and relevant tales of the actual boys in the boat are sprinkled in with side plots varying between Nazi Germany setting up for the Olympics to the Dust Bowl. This made it hard to read as a lot of information could not only be condensed but also wasn't necessarily relevant to the story. The last three chapters really pulled it together for me though as it was what we all came for: the 1936 Olympics. In short, would I read this again? No. Would I recommend it? Maybe. If you like historical sports novels definitely! Otherwise maybe just watch the movie?

Good classic true sports story of unlikely odds, underdogs overcoming adversity, and a win against an enemy (Nazi Germany in this case).  A nice casual read with a happy ending.
