Decent story, though the language and style are distinctly of an age. Such style can be slow and heavy at times, but often poetic and spectacular.
The story set me up for a particular ending. A storyline I saw so clearly that I was often peeved at the main character for being slow on the uptake. When the conclusion finally came...it was a complete smack in the face. I was stunned that this book had given me an ending so far from what I expected. I didn't feel like I missed anything, but rather that the story had failed to deliver what it promised.
A quick visit to Wikipedia informed me that there had originally (1904 publishing) been a different ending, which had been rewritten in 1912. It sounds like the original ending was what I was expecting.
I'm going to hunt up the original ending now.

Początek książki bardzo mi się podobał, ale wraz z upływem stron miałam coraz więcej zarzutów. Więcej tu suchych przemów, niż samej akcji. A element grozy nie przetrwał próby czasu, niestety.

I like Dracula better. I don’t like when novels are told like a story one character tells the other characters in big blocks of text.

Graphic: Misogyny and Blood
Moderate: Xenophobia and Colonisation
This audiobook has the edited “happy ending” that is different from the original ending and overall does not match the story.nadiamer's review against another edition

I struggled to continue reading this book. But I continued for the hope that I would enjoy it more by the end, that I might understand it better. Though the ending was disappointing. The writing is well done but the story itself is not something that I enjoy. There still was a few interesting parts but I’m just glad I’ve finished it and I can move onto a new book.
