characters were not particularly compelling, there wasn't a lot of time spent developing plot points, eventually there were just too many moving parts and they were not interesting enough to hold my attention

Good idea, okay writing, slow in spots. The thing that really disappointed me is the language. Those kids had a little bit of a potty mouth. For a YA novel it was too much. Won't finish the series. I think when authors use swear words that shows me that they have a limited command of the English language. There are so many words out there that a truly gifted author doesn't need to resort to that language.

Read this waaaay back and finally got round to re-reading because I’ve been thinking bout it so much! Even more amazing than the first time I remember. Certain parts were a little slow or overtly descriptive but damn this is such a good story - the plot is so well developed, the characters and their relationships are so compelling. And at it’s core, the mystery itself is so interesting. Will is probably one of my all time favourite protagonists and im not ashamed to admit that as a teen, I used to live by the rules I learnt in this book LOL

The plot was amazing. Highly engaging; I had to finish it in one sitting!
The writing was weird though. And I really don’t like the romance that’s being built… it doesn’t sit right.
Still going to check out the next book.
Overall a good read!

I LOVE this book!! I read it years and years ago and remember enjoying it, but had forgotten most of it. I saw it in the library though and the couple details I still remembered were super intriguing, so I re-read it and it’s so good!! I love the mysteries/ puzzles, the unique character voices, the rules to live by that are scattered throughout. The only thing I’m not really on-board for is his relationship with Brooke—I never really felt their connection and it seems like he’s closer with Elise—but it didn’t detract much. Also I appreciate that the adults in this book are actually helpful!! I feel like so many fantasy books with this type of setting either ignore the adults or make them dumb or mean to leave them out of it, but this seemed actually realistic. And of course the fact that he’s a cross country runner resonates with me. Admittedly there were many clichés and stereotypically YA tropes, but who cares?? I enjoyed it and that’s all that matters.
