This is probably actually a three star book. While reading it I found it surprisingly readable, but I also set it down for weeks because I wasn't compelled to pick it back up.
The author's writing style is very floaty and she refused to name drop anything, instead describing it as the x with y in a way that doesn't hide the identity of the thing from people who know a little about tech or the product she's alluding to and at first it seems silly that she doesn't just say Facebook or Google but by the time we get to her time at GitHub, this technique has sunk in as a way for every specific company, product, or experience to simultaneously stand for every company, product, or experience.
Which is how the book earned that extra star, because even though I've never worked or lived in Silicon Valley, the experiences, feelings, concerns and career details felt like my time in a very small SaaS start up, fresh out of grad school. It felt so personal to me and captured so well things I have struggled to convey and for that I'll give it an extra star.
