This story is incredible. It reminds me of Don Quixote, which is one of the greatest books ever written, which makes this also one of the greatest books ever written. The Journey to the West flows with that same sort of insane, anything-can-happen, never-ending story energy, which I adore, and which is certainly present in Don Quixote's story. And to think this is only the first of four volumes! It ends on such a cliffhanger too! I need to get the next book!

Well, this is one of four, and the story is just getting started. So I can't really comment that fully on what's going down, other than to say that pretty much everything that happens in this story has a poem to prove it.

Stopping on chapter 25 of my Gutenberg project full text, and... it's a cliffhanger! Which makes sense; with the sheer amount of repetition in this book, it's clearly meant to be read one chapter a day, and not in bursts as I have been doing. I am enjoying it so far, though.

this volume ends on a cliffhanger 😭 ig its not too much of a cliffhanger cause I'm sure Pilgrim will get out as he always does but the fun is always in the how.

this is one of the most readable and engaging 16th century texts I've read, even if it has a very dense religious context that I can't say I entirely get. Anthony C Yu is an incredible translator and I have to thank him profusely for working so hard to bring this story in its entirety to non-native speakers in such a comprehensive and enjoyable way.
