Europe on Trial is the most comprehensive and engaging non-fiction work I have read about the Second World War and the Holocaust. In it, Deák, a Hungarian Jew and a leading historian of modern Eastern Europe, explores the fine line between collaboration and resistance in Nazi-occupied Europe and the many incredibly complex ethical questions that go along with both collaboration and resistance. Deák challenges the common narrative that places all blame upon the Germans for the atrocities of the occupation, providing a strong case that both the Holocaust and the initial success of the German war effort would not have been possible without significant collaboration from both officials and ordinary citizens of occupied Europe. This book is quite enjoyable to read, and it really makes you think. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with even the slightest interest in ethics or history.
