"If I mean to kill someone, I do it," Rosethorn told him. "I don't try.”

I'm sorry, Tamora. I tried, I did.
I think I'm too old for this particular series, but I've noticed I'm really struggling to read it. I might try to read it on the trip home (I've got a 2 hour flight + a 2 hour car ride which could be the perfect time to crank this out), but it's causing me to procrastinate and really not want to read.
The first book was ok but, again, I struggled to read it.. I had intended to read these books as nice easy (but fun) children's books, but it just didn't work this time.
It's not you, it's me.

For all the first book in this series was slow, getting to know you and meandering plot, this book was action-packed and got right to the good stuff.  Pirates, mages, and leveled-up abilities abound!  Now that we know this group of kiddos it's going to be a lot of fun watching them grow together as they grow into their talents!
