Even better than Sandry's book, with plenty of love for all of our main characters to go around. This book shocked me with its quality to be honest, and I knew I'd like it going in. Heartily recommended.

Another reread! This is the second book in the Circle of Magic series and focuses heavily on Trisana(Tris) Chandler and her weather magic, as well as delving deeper into the magic all four of our Discipline Cottage crew have spun.
Tris has always struck me as someone to be slightly pitied. Her circumstances suck, and she has a terrible attitude because of it. She hides a soft caring heart quite well under a sparky, snarky exterior. She describes herself as fat, has curly unruly red hair, and wears glasses, meaning she was a target for bullies. Both within her family and among the other girls at the temple before she joined Discipline. I particularly like her growth in regards to being a caretaker, and her showing some valid anger about how her family treated her. She definitely has what I consider to be the showiest and most dangerous magic.
We find the people of Winding Circle two weeks after the devastating earthquake that both tightened the child mages of Discipline Cottage's bond, but nearly killed them in the process. They are dealing with bits of magic crossover between them, and also trying to help restore the temple after the shake up. All the masters are attempting to teach the kids control. In this effort, master Niko puts a spell on Tris's glasses, which leaches to the others, allowing them to see magic, and for Daja to spot trouble doing its best to hide. The people of Winding Circle now have to deal with pirates, all whilst still repairing. And what is this mystery explosive that managed to down a lighthouse? We will soon find out!

I know that Tris is the author's fantasy self insert but honestly she's the worst. She's a tiny, self absorbed jerk with too much power and prejudice and too little sense and she's just a Karen waiting to happen.
Tbh writing is still good.
