Loved this follow-up to The Jasmine Throne! This deepened our existing conflicts so deliciously - internally for both Malini and Priya as they navigate their individual gifts and callings and externally for their nations as they grapple with the cost of Empire and the possibility of not-so-mortal interference. I loved the slow-boiling tension, rapidly rotating POVs (one of my favorite elements of this series so far) and the light horror elements woven in (I was disappointed to get less time in the Hirana but we make up for it with the Yaksa!). The romantic longing is so well done (the epistolary moments at the start were a perfect way to bring their angst on page) and I cannot wait to see how these two navigate all that will come next. And Bhumika!!!! [internally screaming]

I love Suri’s prose. It’s so poetic and tragic, the way she describes even the most mundane things. This book ran deeper than the first one did, though it was just as heartfelt.

Where to start with my praise of this series? I fell in love with Tasha Suri's incredibly rich and detailed writing style from the first chapter of The Jasmine Throne. An incredibly thorough writer, fully exploring each character and their relations to each other, giving you an incredibly vivid tapestry of the wider world they inhabit. Suri's worldbuilding is awe inspring, making you truly believe its a place you could really visit. If you want to read a book that you'll truly fall in love with, this is it! Cannot wait for next book!

Same things I loved about Jasmine Throne are true for the sequel as well. This one gets darker and sadder though.

The ENDING?!?! oh the pining the yearning the betrayal the love the grief. This stupid lesbians and their goddamn devotion and the entire world against them. I can’t even put together anything coherent for an actual review.
I will say that the political maneuvering does appear prominently in this book, which got a tad boring for my taste. And I’m still unsure about the plant magic. The idea of it is compelling but I’m not sure the execution rises to the occasion.

God I'm so conflicted on this book. I'd say I absolutely loved the first 50-75% of the book. The writing is stellar, characters compelling, plot tense, etc etc. The problem came that I absolutely was not into a few plot points that came in and it really tampered my enjoyment of it.
I really did not enjoy finding out the yaksa's plans nor did I enjoy Malini finally gaining power only to have to die for it. Honestly same for Priya essentially having to die for her powers too. I just could not get into that and could not enjoy so many big moments because of that.
I was originally gonna rate this book a 4.5 or 4.75 but because i really didn't enjoy the last chunk/its plotlines I'm keeping it at a 4 since it was still good overall
