I was quite disappointed with the story. There just wasn't anything engaging. Several times I thought of putting it down, but I trudged through.

I thought the first book in this series was decent enough, but that it didn't really live up to the potential of the main idea and was trying too hard to cram too many quirky things in. I'm glad I decided to read book 2 anyway, because I liked it a lot more! The idea of jumping between books and interacting with fictional characters was explored in a lot more detail, the coincidence / entropy device was handled well, anything with resurrected Neanderthals in it is a win in my opinion, and the remaining "trying too hard" elements such as all the weird character names (yegods, the names!) faded into the background while I focused on the rollicking good story. Well done to my sister for buying me books one and two together so I'd keep going - I'll definitely read the rest of the series now.

I'm glad I decided to read this book after finishing The Eyre Affair. The story moved along at a far more enjoyable pace. Granted, this could have had something to do with my familiarity of the world that Fforde built for Thursday and company to traipse around in. It may had also had something to do with the fact that the author treated the world building with a lighter touch.

In any event, I liked this one better and would be happy to read the rest of series.

I've finished this book and am halfway though the next book. I like the way Fforde pulls me into books that I haven't read yet (but my English major librarian wife helps explain the intricacies of all the classics).

How to describe this book? Terry Pratchett meets Lewis Carroll meets Douglas Adams? Just read the first one already.

Just as much fun as the first in the series - great pace, hilarious characters, dreadful puns, enough sad bits to stop it being just a spoof . . .

This is going to sound crazy - but - somehow the time-shifting, book-jumping, literary detectiving in the last book somehow ramped up in such a way that it didn't wholly strain the bounds of believability. This book pushes that envelope with no ramp at all. Suspend your disbelief and just dive in - because it does not make any sense. But it's a delightful lack of sense. It's kind of like an adult version of Inkheart (that children's book about characters moving in and out of books.)

Superb. The second novel compells me to read, just as the first!

Very enjoyable book! Can’t wait to read the rest in the series…as I can afford them.
