I had only heard great things about this book- and I leave it with mixed feelings. I heavily enjoyed Jade Song’s writing style (writing from future POV/easily transitioning between different character’s POV), and look forward to their future works- but overall, I don’t see myself coming back to this story. It has much to appreciate, much to dislike- but overall, it’s a very unique work, carving its own vein of styled horror.

felt a lot like ‘our wives under the sea’ in that the mystical element was very confusing, despite the rest of the story being an interesting read. I was waiting for a deeper dive (pardon the pun) into the characters and their motivations but it never came - all in all, this book felt a bit shallow (wow two for two on the wordplay) and lazy for what could’ve been an incredible read!

a black-swanesque type of story of a young asian woman and her love (and obsession) of swimming and the lengths she would go to come out on top

Truly an insane (good) debut Super Awesome and Wonderful and I can’t wait to re-read and cry some more. The writing style was so engaging for me so Trust!!!! I will be picking up everything else this author releases, so happy I finally read this and if you are thinking about it Please please read!!

I devoured this book in a day. I received an ARC at an event and started reading it shortly after. I think this book is masterfully done, the writing is incredible and you can start to feel the main character, Ren's, evolution into womanhood and something else-hood very acutely. The descent into horror described on the back happens slowly and quickly, and I was definitely shocked even though I knew what she would do to herself. It also gave an interesting insight into the world of competitive sports and asks a lot of questions about whether it's right to place such pressure on young adults already going through so many changes in their bodies and minds. Overall I really enjoyed this book and am grateful to have read it before its release!
