I had only heard great things about this book- and I leave it with mixed feelings. I heavily enjoyed Jade Song’s writing style (writing from future POV/easily transitioning between different character’s POV), and look forward to their future works- but overall, I don’t see myself coming back to this story. It has much to appreciate, much to dislike- but overall, it’s a very unique work, carving its own vein of styled horror.

Gorgeous prose and more gruesome than I expected! Very enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  There is no motive of trying to create a character to root for or a hero to develop.  It is a girl growing up as a foreigner, being exposed to the cruelty of adults and peers and her descent into her own madness.

This book was the first time I had to skim over a section because it made me feel ill.

[Spoilers] if you are sensitive to stitches or anything like them there's a pretty graphic scene later in the book.

I had no idea what to expect and even after reading it, I'm at a loss of what to say about it. I read this book in two days and I didn't know I could feel comforted and disturbed simultaneously until that second day. I have a feeling I would've rated it higher if I didn't go in completely blind.

When I saw the horror genre I was thinking this would involve an actual half-mermaid half human eating people or something but this was definitely not that. The stress Ren is put under is horrifying in itself. I was expecting a fantasy aspect of her actually developing a tail (not creating one) and was confused towards the end on what exactly happened to Ren.
