Incredible, horrifying, the living embodiment of “oh no” and “what the fuck” and “oh god”. Absolutely check your trigger warnings and then buckle up.

I learned so much about swimming culture in a way I wasn’t expecting and how that seems to cause almost a type of dysmorphia of what Ren’s body should be instead of what it was. The opening chapter hits so hard that it was hard to understand what all else was coming next and how it would be delivered to the reader, but this was incredible.

The only thing that kinda didn’t hit for me was Cathy’s portions, I guess? I can kinda see what they’re adding, but she wasn’t a character who I related to very much and so it was hard to sink into her perspective when Ren was just so much more interesting, but it’s a minor qualm at best. I wonder if I went back and read those sections now, knowing the end, if that would help contextualize them more?

This is the kind of writing that should be taught in schools, like it should be an option on reading course book lists for those with an iron stomach. It feels like a book that should be explored in a book club amongst safe friends to talk about all of the trauma Ren suffered and her escape from it.

Full review to come when I can but I just wanted to include a trigger warning for the use of a few ableist phrases in passing as follows:

Chapter 2: ‘Spazzed in glee’
Chapter 6: ‘I was still a concussed invalid’

This book was so intense and horrifying in the perfect way. If you liked Our Wives Under the Sea you would like this.
Would be 5 stars if I could see myself rereading but I don’t.

I think I am still trying to get my mind around what I just read. So I am giving it 4 stars, I think?

At the start of this book you meet Ren Yu, a girl that born for the water. It starts with a love for mermaids and joining the swim team, it then slowly evolves into something else. This is a coming of age story that deals with tons of problems and pressures of being a teenage girl, both physically and mentally.

This book doesn’t have tons of dialogue but that could be by design Ren is so obsessed and driven she doesn’t really need anyone else. Even though she does have a best friend in Cathy who she tolerates best among everyone. As you read it is very easy to get deeper up into her all in mentality and slow entry into reality of becoming a mermaid.

Another really good novel by a debut author!

I love me some weird girl coming of age stories. Taking a story about finding your identity and making it so physical and visceral. Ren is an interesting narrator, I feel for her journey, especially how her discovering her true self runs parallel to a queer awakening of sorts. Her voice is also very decidedly that of a teenager. She's dramatic in her declarations, in a way that reminds me of friends I had in high school. I've seen some criticism of it in other reviews, but it feels believable to me. But I also  was in the sort of friend group where one could claim to be half-vampire, go on about what everyone gets wrong about her kind, and no one would bat an eye.
