Amazing. The way the romance so seamlessly weaved in with both the harsh setting and the historical time period was beautiful. Also the TENSION with the age-gap between Teddy and Linnea.. *chef’s kiss*

"You have a fixation with time--clocks, years. What do they matter when there's love?"
This book was gifted to me by one of most beloved book friends. I was somewhat hesitant to read a story set in the early 1900s farming community, featuring an age gap, but I couldn't overlook the unwavering recommendations to read this book.
I was hooked from the first chapter and thus began my love affair with one of the most well written romances I've read in recent memory. Spencer doesn't write a book, the pages come life and I FELT every moment with Linnea and Teddy. This is not just a slow burning, forbidden romance. It's a heart warming story of family, community, and coming of age. I giggled, fumed, cried, and bawled heaving sobs. I can never convey in a review what a moving experience this book was. The word is thrown around too much, but this story is truly "epic."
"But don't you see its more important to count happiness? Why, even in twenty years we could have more happiness than some people have in fifty."
I recommend this book everyone. I don't know how to go back to reading everyday romance after this.

4 stars for the writing and story, but do know that this book has some "of the time" cw to be aware of...death of family members, hitting children as punishment, fat shaming are just a few
It also takes place during wwi and the 1918 influenza outbreak.
I did like Teddy and Linnea even when they were being idiots. This is age gap, and that is basically the main conflict and while that isn't usually a trope I love, it was done well here.

This is a sweet and tender romance. Teddy and Linnea are a likeable hero and heroine, and the sparks that fly between them as they try to deny their growing passion for each other make for an enjoyable read. The supporting characters in their North Dakota community of Norwegian immigrants are endearing as well, which makes several tragedies that occur in the last part of the book hard to read without a box of Kleenex handy. This is my second LaVyrle Spencer book and it definitely won't be my last.

I haven’t cried during a book for awhile but this one got me many times in the last quarter of the book. Tragedy strikes in many ways and like life, you can’t outrun it. But reading about a pandemic after having lived through one was quite real and raw. And sad. I enjoyed this family, and would gladly read more.
