This was quite different to the first book I read of Bolton's (Now You See Me), which was more of a straight police procedural. Sacrifice is a whole lot weirder and creepier - Tora unearths a body on her land, a woman who appears to have been ritually killed, and gradually she gets more deeply involved in the investigation. The mysteries in Sacrifice can be a little hard to believe in at times, but I still really enjoyed this - I like the way Bolton writes.

Sacrifice is an excellent suspense novel with a strong helping of the Gothic -- terror, unknown forces, secrets, brooding atmosphere. It takes place in the Shetland Islands which confines the action and contributes to the level of tension.
It is hard to give any details without compromising the suspense but it does start with the discovery of the body of a woman accidentally uncovered in a field and preserved in the peat common to the area.

great X-files type novel: hints at supernatural elements, but provides reasonable explanation for the odd events that occurs - great plot: Bolton frequently leads you to believe that the story is going one direction but then surprises you (in a good way) by taking the story in a completely unexpected direction - highly recommended - very much looking forward to her next book

Bit daft premise really, not much thought gone into the whys and what ifs of this supposedly ancient super race. You’d think they’d have risked a few experiments over the years to avoid the need for murder and allow wives to conceive.
Also far too much tooing and froing of the heroine, esp on choppy waters.
Normally love Sharon Bolton books but this was a bit cringe. Sexy doctor character tho.

Very very interesting book. It's like one of those movies based on a true story. It has made me curious and realize that everyone has secrets, some deep and dark. I like the way this author writes and look forward to reading more of her work. Overall, an immensely interesting and enjoyable book.
