Couldn't get past the writing style. Characters were a bit bland. Really wanted to like it.

I have received an ARC of this book in return for my honest opinion. Without spoiling anything, I enjoyed this book immensely. The amount of world building that the author has done without feeling like it was an info-dump, was incredible. While I feel like some things, like the amount of focus on the school, were a little much for how little it ended up mattering. But, it could be expanded on in the coming books.

The ending made me wanting more and I cannot wait to re-read the final published book, and any sequels that will come.

As a black queer woman I felt Lucia’s character in my soul and I’m truly so excited to read the next book and watch her come into her self. Lucia is such a complex character and although you just wanna shake her sometimes you can’t help but empathize with her and the ways she chooses to deal with her trauma.
On a separate note the social system in this book and how it mirrors our current social system in the US was just amazing. Between the main pious ways of the coven and the way all of the mystics are constantly blaming each other while ignoring who’s actually oppressing them *chefs kiss*. I honestly loved this book and cannot wait to not only see more of Lucia’s story but also more of what this author had to say.

The Balance of Fates is a book in serious need of an editor. Our main character Lucia is a total Eeyore of a character, and the entire book was 80% tell and 20% show. There is so much info dump, a lot of it that isn't even important to the plot, that is presented in a very stilted, Magical World 101 sort of way. The romance was cute, but that's about the only saving grace for this story.

Found this book through one of the author’s tiktok posts and decided to give it a read simply out of obligation as a black sapphic and I was not disappointed at all! Really great read, read most of it at work and it was a real fun way to pass the time as my job gets extremely boring at times.

I loved the lore most of all out of everything else in the book, the author has both traditional and brand new interesting takes on the world of witches, vampires and werewolves and I can’t wait for book two to see more of it!
