I was blessed to have found a good man in my early 20s who was - and still is - very supportive. We helped one another realize our (different) childhood traumas and then worked together to mature and overcome our parent's inadequacies as our frontal lobes developed.

My mom isn't as bad as many of the examples in the book. She is mostly just against any emotions - feelings are icky and I wasn't to express them. My dad is a different beast, but I have been no-contact with him for over a decade so he is no longer of concern for me.

It was nice to get some perspective and deeper understanding of my childhood and the repercussions I still work through today. When i read a particularly poignant passage I would highlight it and pass it to my husband so we could discuss it and what feelings I was having.

I originally rented this from the library, but found it useful enough I decided to purchase a copy. I want to take some time after I have processed this to write some thoughts in a journal and needed something to reference back to. I also want to be able to refer to certain sections when I've had a particularl difficult interaction.

This book was truly life-changing in helping me understand the dynamic between myself and my parents. It has helped me find language for the reasons I have felt lonely and unfulfilled in familial relationships and has also helped me understand why communication with my family can be so hard. Rather than blaming parents, this book seeks to free the sensitive and children of parents who did not have the emotionally capacity to meet their needs from feeling they are inherently broken or bad. I can’t recommend it enough for those who have experienced similar situations.

I read this for a supervision group at work. It was easy to read and broke down different concepts well. I'd say it's a good book to understand immaturity and how to find more meaningful relationships overall (aka ch.'s 8-10).
