Low stars but high recommendation value on this one. He wrote it as a warm up to savage detectives and you should read it as such. Warms you up to the style and tenor of sd and 2666, but made redundant by both.

Though more a collection of scenes and impressions and thinner than his other novels, this work is an intriguing and dreamy portrait of two writers taking different paths in the pursuit of their love of literature, hoping to discover their voices.

I really struggled with this book. I should have done some research on the author and Chilean-Mexican migration. The character perspective were loss to me.
